I was the first non-Muslim to be allowed to spend some time as a dervish in a dervish lodge.

My years of psychic research in the West and India had awakened in me a desire to observe first-hand the ecstatic states of mind that dervishes attained in their own unique ways.

I recognized the dervish orders of Islam as schools that allowed one to enter the spiritual path.

In 1925 I spent two weeks among the Naqshbandi dervishes in Istanbul.However, the fact that among the 29 people sentenced to death in Menemen in February 1931 were Sheikh Esat Effendi, his son, and some of the dervishes with whom I had spent time in the dervish lodge, led me to think that my experiences there might be of interest to a wider audience.The Sufis of that period included high-level administrators, university professors, high-ranking military officers and wealthy merchants.

Ottoman sultans were often adherents of one or more Sufi paths.

A radical break with the past, such as today, may sometimes be necessary in the actual form of change.But among a people of many virtues and good qualities, such as the Turkish people, a sensitive remembrance of the beauties of the past can only lead us to a higher individual respect and a stronger sense of unity.

With my heartfelt gratitude for the time I spent in the dervish lodge and the scholars I met there, I dedicate this book to Esad Efendi and to Mehmed Ali Efendi, who was executed on February 3, 1931.
