İmge Kitabevi Yayınları Transformation / / Franz Kafka

Product description

Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams to find himself transformed into a gigantic insect in his bed.

The Transformation begins with perhaps the greatest sentence in the history of literature.

But we realize as the lines progress that this is one of the most poignant sentences of the narrative.

Samsa is, as expected, in a panic. But his panic is not because he has turned into an insect, as one might think, but because he is late

because being late means risking his job, and he cannot take that risk.

His family is crushed under the burden of debt, and the whole family is looking at Samsa's hand.

Here is the truly terrible reality that Kafka foretells with his deep intuition. The individual is detached from his own body, from his own existence, immersed in social life to the point of ignoring even his extraordinary condition, and alienated from himself.

However, when he turns into a gigantic insect, he becomes alienated from society as well.

The painful process takes place as society gradually tries to push him out of itself, and he struggles with all his might to attach himself to some part of society. With The Transformation, Franz Kafka fused modern themes with classical allegorical narrative, opening unexpected horizons and narrative possibilities in world literature.
