it was widely used by germany during the world war ii and was one of the most famous german weapons in the conflict.

improvements to the original model have led to a wide range of weapons. The term applies to a series of related weapons, officially designated as the 8.8 cm flak 18, the improved 8.8 cm flak 36, and later the 8.8 cm flak 37.

[n 1] flak is the abbreviation of german flugabwehrkanone (also called fliegerabwehrkanone) [5] [n 2] , which means "aircraft defense gun" which is the main purpose of the weapon.

in english, “flak” became a general term for ground anti-aircraft fire. In informal use, the weapons were universally known as "acht-acht" (eight-eight) by the germans and "eighty-eight" by their allies. Air defense units were typically equipped with either a kommandogerät (command device) firing control computer or a portable würzburg radar, responsible for a high level of accuracy against aircraft.

the versatile carrier allowed for firing of the 8.8 cm flak while still on its wheels in a limited anti-tank mode, could be fully emplaced in just two and a half minutes.

[4] its successful use as an improvised anti-tank gun led to the development of a dedicated tank gun: the 8.8 cm kwk 36, abbreviated as "kwk" kampfwagen-kanone (literally "tank gun," or "tank-mounted gun"), which was meant to be mounted on a turret as the tank's primary weapon.

this gun served as the main gun of the tiger i heavy tank. In addition to these krupp designs, rheinmetall later created an even more powerful anti-aircraft gun, the 8.8 cm flak 41, which was produced in relatively small numbers. The anti-tank and tank destroyer 8.8 cm pak 43 gun used for krupp, elefant and jagdpanther corresponded to another prototype of the long-barreled 8.8 cm gun developed as a turret-mounted 8.8 cm kwk 43 heavy tank gun.
