Edirne, one of the important cities of the Byzantine period, was made the capital by the Ottomans upon their conquest. The conqueror of Edirne, I. Murad, held the first Friday prayer at the Halebi Mosque, which was converted from a church in Kaleiçi, under his order. Another mosque built during this period is the Church Mosque, converted from the Hagia Sophia in Kaleiçi. During the time of Yıldırım Bayezid, the importance of Edirne increased even further. He made Edirne the center in the wars he undertook in Rumelia. A long period of stability was experienced in Edirne under Ottoman rule, and significant observable growth occurred in all aspects. The city, which served as the gateway to the conquests of the Balkans, quickly adopted the Turkish-Islamic identity. Sultans, who took care to display their might magnificently, had mosques built in their own names. In addition to the Ottoman sultans, important state figures such as grand viziers, defters, and sancak beyleri adorned the city with magnificent structures. These rare works, commissioned by the leading names of the Ottoman Empire, have symbolized the city's Turkish-Islamic civilization. New neighborhoods have been established in the city center, and along with the newly established administrative, religious, military, and social institutions, the population has increased.
