The wapshot affair, which was evaluated with this first novel and translated into turkish for the first time, can be read both as a continuation story and as an independent novel. The reader wanders the streets of the familiar st. botolph's, but this time the members of the wapshot family are scattered far and wide. Coverly is working at a mysterious missile research site, and is also struggling with the ghost of his father

while moses seeks solace in drink, the old and eccentric cousin honora is approaching the end of her story. Betsey and melissa, as the wives of two brothers, get caught up in this mess, but melissa almost becomes one of the novel's protagonists. The wapshot scandal once again proves that cheever, who made his mark as a master storyteller in the history of literature, was also a powerful novelist. Cheever, who captures not only the spirit of a family but also an era, skillfully reveals the grim underside of the american suburban bourgeoisie and the slow unraveling of the american dream with his unique melancholic and humorous style.

“many have written about the suburbs, but only cheever created an archetype from it.
