Product description

Does capital punishment establish justice or does it create an easy illusion of justice by placing the burden of crimes that cannot be considered outside the social-political framework on the back of a single individual? The great writer Victor Hugo, in the story of a death row inmate, draws attention to the human dimension of the work while making a heavy social criticism.

Hugo's preface to the work, written at a time when guillotine executions were greeted with enthusiasm among the public, is a lesson in legal philosophy that draws attention to human-social problems that remain topical even today.

"The dead of the Place de Grève perhaps come together on certain dates, on dark winter nights, in this square of their own. There will be no moon, and we will speak in low voices. The Town Hall will be there, with its weathered façade, its riddled roof, and its relentless clock dial for everyone. In the square where demons behead an executioner, there will be a guillotine from hell, at four o'clock in the morning. This time we will be around it."
