Apocalyptic fiction, derived from the word apocalypse, meaning revelation or the revealing of secrets about the future, deals with the end of civilization due to epidemics, nuclear war, cybernetic uprising, supernatural events, ecological disasters or other disasters.

Shelley dramatizes the effects of an epidemic on the Western world in the fluent style of the Romantic period and conveys it through a fiction based on contrasting characters who are reflections of real people.For example, Adrian, who drags his acquaintances after him in search of a natural paradise, is a fictionalized portrait of the author's husband Percy Bysshe Shelley

Lord Raymond, who sets out from England to fight the Greeks and dies in Istanbul, is inspired by the life of Lord Byron.The novel also expresses the author's grief at the loss of his circle of what he calls "the elite" and the meaninglessness of the world, the individual's lack of power to direct history

Shelley refers to "the last man" in his diary as "my alter ego, my second self, the relic of a beloved group left behind when my comrades died before me".
