summary:“i'm coming to shiny.

grandpa unplugged the light strings, neon and spotlights.

first time i see the front end dark.

on this corner of the street, there are only two lights, on the two sides of the taxi stand.

i didn't realize it was that little before.

the paclinko illuminated everything.

it attracted all the bugs of the night to itself.

”Claire, who lives in switzerland with her parents, travels to visit her grandparents in tokyo for the summer vacation at the end of her twenties. His intention is to ensure that his grandparents, who were forced to leave their hometowns due to the civil war fifty years ago and have not stepped foot in korea since, can see their homeland again before they pass away and run a pachinko parlor in tokyo.

but after fifty years of emigration, the idea of “returning” is not easy for these old people at all.

unable to know how to convince them, the young woman finds herself a challenge to avoid this silent sadness, to ease the feeling of alienation she feels, and she starts to give french lessons to a little japanese girl whom she will develop a kind of sisterhood relationship in the future.

With its sharp and lean language, pacinko ballis draws the reader into an intimate atmosphere of calm violence, while skillfully conveying the imbalance, loneliness, misunderstandings and love inherent in family relations.

“it's a scrupulously distilled book of feelings, charged with elegance and melancholy.
