CAN MANIAC

Product description

John von neumann was a scientific giant, a hungarian wonder who revolutionized every field he touched.

After seeking the foundations of mathematics in germany during his youth, he emigrated to the us, where he became involved in the power games of the cold war, invented game theory, pioneered artificial intelligence and digital life, designed the world's first programmable computer, which was humorously named maniac. Their mathematical prowess was so extraordinary that nobel prize-winning physicist hans bethe suggested a mind like his could point to a superior species, more advanced than humans. However, von neumann also helped in the creation of the atomic bombs that destroyed hiroshima and nagasaki. When he died of cancer in 1957, likely due to the radiation exposure he received in los alamos, he was one of the most valuable advisors to the american government on nuclear weapons and strategy.

Benjamín labatut, weaving fact with fiction, places john von neumann at the heart of a literary triptych about the dark foundations of our modern world and artificial intelligence in maniac, highlighting the terrifying dimensions of science and technology that bring us to the brink of annihilation. It illustrates how "highly capable" artificial intelligences, evolving beyond human comprehension, could become a devastating and disheartening force for both humanity and the planet.

“[labatut] is rising rapidly as the most important south american writer since borges.
