Oscar wilde's sensational novel, *the picture of dorian gray*, is as captivating as the story of its publication, riveting both in its content and its journey to the page. Five years after the novel's publication, wilde was overnight transformed from one of the most vibrant figures in english literature into a sexual criminal. Quotes from the novel are presented as evidence in trials where the writer is judged on the grounds of being homosexual.

no matter what happened in those days, it stands out from its contemporaries by creating a break in the perception of sexuality and masculinity in the novel period, and by carrying easily visible traces of the author's life. "readers and critics are scratching their heads trying to figure out which real-life figures the characters are based on, but the author simply says, 'it holds a lot of me.'" Basil hallward is what i thought i was, lord henry wotton is what people thought of me

dorian is what i wanted to be – maybe in another era.
