In the story, the little raccoon says, “I don’t want to go to school,” right at the beginning. When I read that to my daughter, who wants to go to school, it really stuck with her. When I read it to her, the story took on a whole new meaning—she couldn’t make sense of it. Then her mom puts a kiss on her palm, and the baby raccoon is left by its mother in the middle of the night. Now, here the raccoon—an animal—is left by its mother at night, and the reason for going to school creates a shock effect on the child. Even if I somehow try to explain it away by saying, “Raccoons go to school at night,” the issue isn’t resolved. The mother never comes back to pick it up. If only it had been a person instead of a raccoon at the end—the kiss placed in its palm creates a drama for the child; the child keeps thinking about it, looking at it, and crying, “Mom, Mom.” I mean, honestly, my daughter couldn’t make sense of this book, and it got even worse because we bought it— she’s waiting for an explanation from me right now—I’ll have to come up with another story to fix it. I’m really curious how the characters in this story actually made it onto the bestseller list— I trusted the author and bought it.
