Babil Kitap Construction of National Identities Babil Books

Product description

National identities are not natural phenomena

on the contrary, they have to be built, perhaps invented. Speaking of the basic elements of national identity today, we can talk in a flash about the founding ancestors, history, heroes, language, monuments and folklore. And could we get the same answer when the nation is mentioned in every period of history? Anne-marie thiesse answers this question in the light of developments in the last two centuries in the construction of national identities. Tracing the relationship between the development of industrial capitalism and the formation of modern states and the construction of national identity, thiesse maintains that the idea of the nation was actually the result of a highly international interaction. He moves through a field of study ranging from epic genealogy to ethnographic museums, from the development of national languages to the emblems on coins, and comes up with a sketch of this collective human being. It offers a competent understanding of how we should understand the nation-building adventure that began in 18th century europe in the 21st century.
