In death and time, which consists of lectures given by emmanuel lévinas during the academic years 1975-76, which stand out with an important change in tone that he brought to contemporary phenomenology from the ethical field, we witness the reading of figures from the history of philosophy such as aristotle, plato, kant, hegel, bergson, and especially a confrontation with heidegger's work being and time. Heidegger is appreciated on the one hand for his criticism of the assumed objective understanding of time, as measured by clocks, as well as for his treatment of the unique temporality of being in close relation to our condition of finitude, as in bergson's concept of durée, while on the other hand he is criticized for remaining within the fundamental ontology design in his dasein (there-is) deliberations. The thought of death as the “most unique possibility” of human existence, the knowledge of being doomed to death as a certainty from the beginning, the emptiness brought about by death establishing the unique temporality of existence in its entirety and always in the form of anxiety is discussed here in full length in the thought of heidegger. Heidegger's death describes the death of the “i” as my own death from the death of the death of the other as an inauthentic experience, bringing it into a secondary state. Lévinas, on the other hand, enters mainly from the “death of the other” to derive the form of anxiety that death can lead, although he resists the terms of experience. My relationship with the other, my responsibility for his death, and the question that his absence raises, “the absence of a response”, my effort to cling to existence (conatus) is more threatening from the beginning, and the possibility of “my own death” is stronger and more primordial than him in terms of emotion. My relationship with the other will never be reduced to the terms of the “identical” (to the same to the other), therefore, resisting the knowable and the normative claims of consciousness, will never be gathered together in a synchrony

It is my own successive temporality that time is a relation with the infinite. In lévinas, a responsibility that i can never be equated with is born from the fact that even a non-being is defined by the terms of ontology and a new thought of time that cannot be conceived as consisting in death that retains its enigmatic quality and in the successive arrival of moments within a no longer chronological series. Here, the thought of infinity is no longer a representable eternity or a “other world” design that has gained a metaphysical or theological content

perhaps it only has the form of a separation and farewell (adieu).
