Iris murdoch's fourth novel, published in 1958, explores themes such as morality, spirituality, freedom, marriage, and sexuality through the internal conflicts and mutual relationships of the novel's characters. Through the gay characters in the novel, he approaches the subject in a tone far from being condemnatory, in an early period like the 1950s.

the story focuses on a network of complex relationships between members of a non-church religious community, a group of strangers temporarily included in the group.

members of the congregation who wish to enjoy the blessings of the religious life without breaking with the outside world are subjected to a serious test by the presence of strangers among them.

with the accidental discovery of a bell from the middle ages in the lake around, these already tied to the cotton thread of the ties receive a lasting blow. The characters in the novel, unable to escape from the outside world, fail to retreat and turn to spirituality because their problems and fragilities from the past do not leave their pursuit.
