Isbn: 9789755393735 Author: john fowles Translator: meram arvas Having passed through the semi-intellectual depressions of his age, nicholas urfe, an oxford graduate, goes as an english teacher to an obscure greek island to escape the gloom and love of england. At a time when he is having trouble days alone, and his dreams of being a poet are also falling into the water, he meets the mysterious millionaire conchis. The magician is like a metaphysical fun train that navigates through the labyrinth of the human mind.

in these labyrinths, the grey zone between reality and illusion is violated by our hero.

as a result of the spooky events that develop one after another, love and betrayal, urfe becomes suspicious of everything, especially his own mental health.

In the story, where various allusions to mythological elements and shakespeare's famous play the tempest are made, john fowles skillfully describes the cruelty of war, the tranquility of a mediterranean island, the complex structure of the human mind, the nature of the relationship between men and women, the concepts of god and freedom.

based on the idea that true freedom can only be possible by knowing oneself, the relationships between dreams and real experiences are put on stage in a stunning way by conchis, prospero of fowles, with a series of illusions, masks and spectacles.

in the magician, the threat that humanity faces is hidden not only behind the walls of western culture, but also behind the walls of human self-awareness. This is a journey to a new level of consciousness that can be reached through the efforts of individuals who discover that they have the freedom to stay away from the behavioral patterns imposed by the social structures of the culture they were born into, like urfe.

the magician, on the list of the best hundred english-language writings of the 20th century by random house, is an essay of literature on the difficulties of achieving personal freedom and the discovery of the self of the human being.
