Description: The cadres who planned the May 27, 1960 coup established a 38-member committee, called the National Unity Committee, after their operation was successful. The government was composed of civilians and military personnel selected by the National Unity Committee (MBK). Generally made up of colonels and lower-ranking officers, the committee selected General Cemal Gürsel as the head of state and government while observing the hierarchy within the army. Members of the deposed regime and high-ranking bureaucrats who served them were arrested. They began to be tried in the special court established at Yassıada. It was a program broadcast on Ankara radio after the evening news. “The defendants were brought in without handcuffs.” The sentence “has not been erased from my memory yet.” For the opposition parties, only a prohibition on politics and propaganda was introduced. Millions of citizens who had supported the ruling party, which was prosecuted in the special court on charges of constitutional violations and sentenced to death, and whose assets were confiscated, began to be disturbed by this unjust situation. The practice contradicted the argument of the coup leaders that “we did not make the coup against any group.” This contradiction soon surfaced among the soldiers who carried out the coup. Clusters began to form around two basic views. Those holding the first opinion argued that the military personnel in power lacked experience in governing the country and needed the support of experienced individuals and groups to overcome the ensuing administrative crisis. The first round of the arm wrestling match between the hero of the War of Independence, former soldier, and later political leader, Prime Minister İsmet İnönü, and Ankara's powerful Colonel Talat Aydemir took place on February 22, 1962. The government dismissed the mutinous officers on the evening of February 22. The soldiers resisted this. The Air Force and General Staff were on the government’s side. The soldiers who took to the streets heeded the calls from both sides not to “shed blood.” In accordance with a handwritten document signed by İnönü, stating that no legal action would be taken against the rebels, everyone returned to their barracks and were retired. Among these officers, known as the “February 22 group,” was my father, Colonel Turgut Alpagut, who served as the Commander of the Army Band Regiment.
