Adnan Atalay, who was my assistant at the time (previously a student and later a fellow teacher) and I went through Zuckmayer's harmony notes one by one, and by making explanations and improvements on the necessary note examples, and by completing the missing subjects, we wrote 'Theory

Adnan Atalay had a great contribution to our work on these books between 1974 and 1976, writing the notes and explaining the text parts

Much later, in 1994, he continued to help in the reworking and reorganization of the books, especially in the 'Preliminaries', 'Knowledge of Scales and Tonality', 'Knowledge of Intervals' and 'Knowledge of Chords', which he wrote from a completely new point of view

for these contributions I owe him my eternal gratitude

In order to benefit sufficiently from the book, one must have a good knowledge of notation and a sensitive ear (hearing), do a lot of solfeggio, and be able to play at least easy piano pieces, cadences and harmony tasks on a keyboard instrument such as the piano

In addition, one must have a good knowledge of scales and tonality, intervals and chords

For this purpose, we have tried to give the necessary information in a comprehensive way under the heading 'Preliminaries'

only those who have acquired this knowledge can begin harmony

If sufficient knowledge on these subjects has already been acquired, the 'Introduction to Harmony' section can be started

Nevertheless, it is useful to review the 'Preliminaries'

After the rules of harmony are explained one by one, plenty of homework is given on each subject

these homeworks should be done in several different ways, they should be played, sung in choirs and their skills should be gradually put into practice in the form of small compositions
