Product description
"the story of simon arakelyan, a catholic armenian from ankara, who survived the massacres and deportations in 1915, ""ankara chronicle: my memories of menophilia"" is the chronology of a terrifying journey of 122 days." The book, which was published in turkish with armenian letters in 1921 and will be seen for the first time in latin letters, reveals all the vividness and reality of the events that the arakelyan, who served as an officer under the reji administration, and those around him went through.
According to arakelyan's account, in the summer of 1915, while the orthodox armenians of ankara were being massacred, the catholic armenians, who were waiting fearfully for the day when their turn would come, were finally arrested in groups and subjected to a death journey where they would struggle with maltreatment, attacks, hunger, and natural conditions. The next stop after tarsus, which was initially designated as the target, is the harsh deserts where the chances of survival are almost non-existent. There is only one thing on arakelyan's mind: to do and edip to save from going to der zor.
luckily, fate is on his side. After a traumatic escape, he recovers and publishes his desperate memoirs in istanbul in 1921. In memory of arakelyan, according to the official history narrative, the catholic armenians who were not subjected to displacement and massacre, what they experienced in 1915, the conditions of displacement, the expropriated property and the 1917 ankara fire are shedding light on the issues from primary sources.
but the book is not limited to these only.
The text, which describes how an ordinary ottoman armenian felt during those days, how he evaluated the exposure he was subjected to, and his own internal calculations with his nudity, tells the story of a person from the inside of the catastrophe, which is extremely original and special because it is directly and without intermediaries, it is made to be flesh and bone.
The work, prepared under the editorship and translation of murat cankara from the department of turkish language and literature at ankara university, also includes the transliteration of the original text for those who want to read arakelyan's sentences, written in fine ottoman, from his own mouth.
