summary:“either a solution to our troubles or an edict to our condition” the tanzimat of the provinces conveys to us the voice of the armenian villagers who suffered from the atrocities during the tanzimat period, when important reforms were introduced within the framework of life, property and honor security in the ottoman empire. Talin suciyan, using documents from countless archives in turkey and abroad, is incorporating a struggle for rights and justice that has been forgotten by dominant historical writing into historical writing.

the work addresses both the pluralistic governance strategies used by the ottoman state and the experiences of different geographical, social layers of the ottoman armenian society in this process.

it highlights the differentiation between the living conditions of armenians, especially in the provinces and in the capital, and focuses on farmers, peasants, migrant workers and women who make up the majority of the ottoman armenian society.
