Product description

In his work, "what is art?", tolstoy synthesized his thoughts on aesthetics and art history. this work describes how art became detached from its folk origins, became the entertainment of the wealthy class and the church under their command, and drifted towards an incomprehensible decadence. according to tolstoy, contemporary art has become an art of illusion and effect, and very few artists, including himself, can remain detached from it. artists like dostoevsky and dickens have provided rare examples of this. despite being banned during the tsarist period due to its religious content and ignored during the soviet period, this work has had an international impact. tolstoy's writings on art and literature, other than "what is art?", range from the undermining of the shakespeare myth to maupassant criticism and the suggestion of solutions on how to make art and publishing for the people. in these writings, we see tolstoy as a thinker who closely observed the art of his time and identified the first examples of socialist art.
