Product description

Throughout the last two centuries, the foundational text of islam underwent a dual revolution. by embracing the printing and translation of the quran, muslim communities worldwide effectively transformed a manuscript text into one accessible in every language. this process, beginning with the controversial publications of commentaries and translations in local languages within the ottoman empire and south asia, eventually evolved into widespread efforts to translate and publish the quran in every region of the islamic world, including arab-speaking countries like egypt and saudi arabia. these efforts are remarkable, considering that at the dawn of the twentieth century, the majority of muslims claimed that quran translations were impossible, impermissible, or even heretical. ultimately, printed and translated versions of the quran have been widely accepted by muslim communities. focusing on the ottoman empire and turkey, and following the debates in russia, egypt, indonesia, and india, this book explores the nature of this revolution.
