Continuing the discussion sparked by chomsky's *language and mind*, *the reiterative mind* challenges the widely held belief that language is what uniquely makes us human. In this intriguing book, michael corballis suggests that what distinguishes us from the animal kingdom is our capacity for recursion: in other words, our ability to embed our thoughts within other thoughts.

&quot

I think so, i am &quot

It is an example of a recursive thought

because the person thinking is including himself in his thought.

recursion allows us to grasp our own mind and the minds of others.

at the same time, it gives us mental &quot

Time travel &quot

It gives us the power to do

thus, we can place our past experiences or imagined ones for the future into our present awareness.

Drawing upon fields such as neurobiology, psychology, animal behavior, anthropology, and archaeology, corballis demonstrates how these recursive structures led to the evolution of language and speech, enabling us to share our thoughts, plan with others, and shape our environment to better express our creative imaginings. Corballis reveals how the recursive mind played a critical role in our survival in the harsh conditions of the pleistocene era and how it evolved to enhance social cohesion. It traces the traces of the adaptation of the language to the self-recursive mind, first with hand-arm movements and then with the emergence of homo sapiens.

&quot

The self-replicating mind is a very good resource for experts, with many references to the field as much as the average reader.
