The most important event in the history of 20th-century mathematical logic is the theorems proved by kurt gödel on the foundations of mathematics. The most important reason for loading qualities such as certainty, consistency, and completeness into mathematics was that the "true" propositions, that is, the theorems, derived from the axioms could be proven with certainty.

thus "truth" and proofability were overlapped.

It was widely accepted that mathematics, with its theorems, was either absolutely provable if true, or demonstrably false if not. in mathematics, absolute certainty and consistency were considered paramount. Gödel has conclusively proven, once again based on mathematics, that these acceptances and expectations are not as solid as they seem. By addressing principia mathematica, the monumental work of whitehead and russell on the logical foundations of mathematics, he showed that the foundations would always remain incomplete. Gödel proved that within a formal system encompassing the arithmetic of natural numbers, there are undecidable propositions

that is, these propositions can neither be proven nor can their formal negations be proven. But on the other hand, it can be shown through precise mathematical reasoning that these indecisive suggestions are correct.

moreover, gödel proved that the consistency of a formal system encompassing arithmetic of natural numbers cannot be proven within that system. The results of gödel's work have revealed that mathematics has inherent limitations.

"there is no doubt that the work i have come up with, on the one hand, is based on the book of nagel and newman. Douglas r. hofstadter, author of gödel, escher, bach, writes: "this is the best book ever written about gödel's proof."
