A critic of the period said: “new novels have a distinct difference compared to previous ones. Some of the innocence, the warmth within that innocence, the subjectivity disappeared, and instead, a ruthless mockery, a polite condescension, and all kinds of silliness invaded the fantasy abandoned by emotion. The tales of knights, bandits, and sorcerers, with their pure-hearted, healing, and somewhat upright heroes, have given way to a subtle and poisonous cruelty.

emotional, pathetic bourgeois novels, in which real loves are experienced and only parents and parents are troubled, have receded in the face of cunningly selected intimacies and fornication stories. Hoffman is a writer who fully deserves this portrayal. Ernst theodor amadeus hoffmann is a writer who has made his name his own. Out of respect for mozart, he discarded his baptismal name wilhelm and took amadeus.

it has inspired many opera composers to use their imagination in a range from fantastic fairy tales to highly thought-provoking stories of eerie and supernatural events.

Richard wagner, the mastersingers of nuremberg (1868) Paul hindemith, cardillac (1926) Jacques offenbach, tales of hoffmann (1881)

Léo delibes, coppélia (1870), and, of course, pyotr ilyich tchaikovsky's ballet suite the nutcracker (1892), based on hoffmann's story.
