the work of the leading soviet kazakh literature, tahavi ahtanov, the winner of the largest art award of the soviet union, boran, is an unusual novel in which the author proves his mastery. In the preface to the book, cengiz aytmatov said, “may my pen be a gift to this great writer.” tahavi ahtanov describes the battle of mankind against nature in a passionate language, presenting kazakhstan and kazakh society in all its dimensions. Following our hero kozban, we admire his resistance power. Between the terrible ululations of the borane, which lasted three days and three nights, the author skillfully describes the incredible trials of kozban's life. Captured by the nazis during the battle, kozban has to repeat throughout his life the saying he learned from his friend in the concentration camp: “a man finds a way out of every bad situation.” As he remembers his past, we hold our breath watching kozban's struggle for survival. Whether in the prison camp, or in the dormitory he returned to after his captivity, when he was doubted, or while trying to survive in the tunnel.
