Türkiye İş Bankası Kültür Yayınları A Child Without a Home - Modern Klasikler Dizisi

Product description

The rise of the nazis to power in 1933 in germany had a heavy blow on irmgard keun's brilliant literary career, which began in the weimar period.

the nazis, who did not spare any pleasure from the confident and independent female portraits in their works, did not delay to put her on the blacklist.

books were banned and destroyed. After his attempt to file a lawsuit against the gestapo due to the financial losses he suffered failed, he found a solution by leaving his country. In this novel of keun, which dates back to 1938, he tells the story of the pre-wwii period he spent in exile, from the perspective of ten-year-old kully.

observations distilled from the innocence of this maverick little girl soften the tense atmosphere of the era a little bit. Kully, along with her father, a dissident writer, and her mother, had to leave germany. As their visas expire, the family, who are leaving the country they are in, stand as five pennies walking around in europe under the shadow of war.

Boundaries form the main plot of this journey story without a destination: the boundaries that separate countries, as well as restrictive circumstances that prevent kully and his family from living the life they want… even if they are hungry, they stay in luxury hotels and spend the money they get in expensive restaurants.

hotels are stranded because they can't pay the bill. Kully's father, who is addicted to the drink that constantly squeezes his publishers and acquaintances for money, carries traces from the austrian writer joseph roth, with whom keun had a romantic relationship during his exile.
