Summary: Georg Büchner (1813-1837): is considered one of the founders of contemporary German theater.

He studied medicine at the universities of Strasbourg and Giessen.

Inspired by the Parisian uprising of 1830, Büchner was reported by the villagers after he published a pamphlet calling for revolution and formed a secret group, forcing him to flee to Switzerland. He left behind five works and died in exile in 1837.

Although Danton’s Death and the unfinished Woyzeck are influenced by Shakespeare and the German Romantic Sturm und Drang movement, they are qualitatively far ahead of their time.

Although they are unfinished, fragmentary texts, both Woyzeck and Leonce and Lena are striking plays that Büchner wrote with a sharp sense of humor.

Büchner elegantly addresses the absurdities of modern relationships, the frivolities of the bourgeoisie, and criticism of the aristocracy, while consistently keeping a paramount desire in the background: human freedom.
