Product description

After the second world war, a group of people, all of whom are running away from financial, personal or political problems in their lives, come together in a small hotel on lake geneva. Madam bonnard, the owner of the swiss-tour hotel, is a witness to many secrets that her guests cannot tell their friends, families, or lawyers.

the quirks, the helplessness, the jealousies, the prejudices and the resentments of each of the guests are reflected in the relationships they have with each other. Through the characters of stead, the film analyzes the legacy of the war, the effects of the cold war, and the rise of international laundering of black money and tax evasion. First published in 1973, shortly before christina stead's return to australia, and inspired by the author's experiences in european hotels, the little hotel is a subtle hicvid in post-war europe, enriched with the details of changing lives. Stead, a communist economist, his wife william j. blake kept a constant diary during their years living in europe in the 1950s.
