Product description

In the dueling published in the novoye vremya newspaper in 1891, chekhov reveals the complexity of human nature in a striking style. "his discussions with a zoologist he knew, on one of the popular issues of the period, ""the survival of the fittest"", have laid the foundation for the epistemological and ethical conflicts axis." The author has chosen the caucasus as the setting for this story, where he highlights the power of forgiveness towards others and the ability to change and improve oneself. he has chosen a small town on the black sea coast.

educated russian aristocrat layevski lives with a married woman and has become a state official in this city where they ran away together.

however, over time, he has become alienated from the woman and seeks ways to end the relationship. Layevski's irresponsibility, excessive drinking, spending money without knowing his account, and trying to get rid of a woman who is dependent on him, arouse disgust in the social darwinian zoologist von koren. "in the eyes of von koren, who can only look at events from the framework of science, people like layevski pose a threat to humanity and civilization, and if the world is ""purified"" from such people, it will become a much more livable place."

the ethical debate and battle of ideas, which gradually grows between the two, including a military doctor and a chaplain, who testify, suddenly turns into a challenge involving physical violence.
