Oscar wilde (1854-1900): irish genius writer. In the victorian era, he became the most recognized representative of the british aesthetic movement of the 19th century with his literary wit, subtle humor, and extraordinary lifestyle. The poem, story, and plays, as well as the work of dorian gray's portrait, have earned him fame.
He was tried and sentenced to two years in prison for his sexual orientation, which was the result of the strict moral understanding of the era.
Three years after gaining his freedom, he died in poverty in paris.
The portrait of dorian gray is the only novel of wilde that caused great debates at the time, received extremely harsh criticism despite few praises, and was even shown as evidence against him during trials.
As the author states in his preface, which can be read as a “art is for art” manifesto, it is the protagonist of literary works in which evil and virtue are used as artistic material.
Dorian gray, who gradually moves away from the values that accept the eternal youth and beauty wish and makes a person human, achieves immortality with the rare description of his wife in wilde's world literature.Dorian gray's portrait has been adapted for the cinema many times and has also inspired many other art forms.
