Product description

In this masterful "noir" thriller, 1emeric pressburger has written one of the most moving works on genocide and the banality of evil. In June 1965, piano tuner karl braun moves into his rented room in London

at first glance, he appears to be a gentleman with a musical soul, a man with whom the reader can easily sympathize, a man grieving the loss of his wife and child during the war

This German, who gains the respect of his neighbors by claiming that he left Germany in 1933 because of his political views, is in fact none other than Dr. Otto Reitmüller, a neurosurgeon and Nazi war criminal who has been wanted for twenty years for crimes against humanity

The tension gradually increases with the paranoia of the doctor who lives in fear of being caught

As Pressburger builds towards the shocking finale, he explores the concepts of morality, responsibility and divine justice

only one review of The Glass Pearls, published in 1966, criticized the revelation of Braun's true identity in the first chapter, missing the author's main point

the novel was soon forgotten and lost as a literary treasure

At a time when war criminals were portrayed in literature by fitting them into certain stereotypes, Pressburger's goal was to point out, as Hannah Arendt emphasized, that the perpetrators of the Holocaust were not perverts or sadists, but "profoundly human" through the character of Karl Braun, who combines an ordinary man with a monster who committed gruesome crimes
