summary:Imagine sending your driverless car to pick up your grocery order in the not-so-distant future. Your car is equipped with all the capabilities an ai-powered vehicle can have, and programmed to drive better than you.

the car stops when it comes across a red light.

but the light doesn't change and your car can't move where it is.

your car's obstacle avoidance, lane tracking, and route calculation capabilities are irrelevant now.

the vehicle can't move because it lacks the common sense that a person with common sense can understand what is happening in such a situation and produce a solution. Ronald brachman and hector levesque, leading experts in the field of artificial intelligence, discuss in "machines like us" what it takes to develop common sense artificial intelligence instead of today's customized artificial intelligence expertise.

it intelligently considers the common sense of people and explains in an understandable way how common sense can be put into a machine. Brachman and levesque explore ways to imbue artificial intelligence with common sense and reasoning, delving into a crucial topic: how we can trust the decisions of autonomous machines.

they set two main conditions for reliable autonomous ai systems: that there are reasons for what they do, and that they are open to advice.

after all, both depend on common sense.
