Product description
Alan Gratz has written an absolute masterpiece with Refugee.
This book is a powerful, gripping, and deeply moving read that hooks you from the very first page and stays with you long after you close the cover.
It should be required reading for adults and young adults alike.
The novel brilliantly weaves together the stories of three different children, in three different eras, all embarking on perilous journeys to escape horrific circumstances: Josef, a Jewish boy escaping Nazi Germany in 1939 aboard the MS St.
Louis.
Isabel, a Cuban girl fleeing the riots and unrest of Havana in 1994 on a homemade raft.
Mahmoud, a Syrian boy escaping the devastation of Aleppo in 2015. The way Gratz structures the narrative is masterful.
Each chapter ends on a suspenseful note, making the book nearly impossible to put down.
Even though these characters are separated by decades and continents, their shared experiences of courage, survival, and the heartbreaking quest for a safe place to call home tie them together beautifully.
The historical accuracy and attention to detail bring each setting to life with intense realism.
What makes this book so incredible is its emotional weight.
It handles heavy, complex historical and geopolitical themes in a way that is accessible, deeply empathetic, and profoundly humanizing.
It forces the reader to look past the historical dates or news headlines and see the real human faces, families, and children caught in the crossfire of crisis.
Refugee is a fast-paced, heart-pounding, and emotionally resonant tour de force.
It teaches profound lessons about resilience, hope, and basic human kindness.
It is a stunning read that will absolutely change the way you look at the world.

Very well written and engaging book.
Brings the plight of migrants to a very personal level.
It's engaging for adults and quite powerful for kids.
The book is so good, I can’t find the right words for explaining how wonderful it was— I’m a 13 year old reader and finding a good (age appropriate) book can be very hard, but this one definitely exceeded my expectations! The author clearly explains each of the characters stories in the most wonderful way, and it’s even educating because I learned about the history of other countries.
Overall it’s a book that I would definitely enjoy reading!
