This is the tale of twins, Arthur and Maudie who have been orphaned and left destitute.
Their father was the famous explorer, Ernest Brightstrom.
Ernest sailed away in a sky ship in an attempt to be the first to reach South Polaris.
Unfortunately, he went down with his ship resulting in the death of everyone on board.
The Brightstar name is tarnished
Ernest was accused and found guilty of stealing fuel from competitor Eudora Vane’s ship.
The twins are devasted to lose their only parent, to lose their home and be left impoverished.
After they are sold and forced into slave labor they run away and join the rag tag crew of a sky ship captained by Harriet Culpeper.
What they’ve been told about their father doesn’t make sense and they are determined to discover the truth and clear their family name.
Captain Culpepper is determined to beat Eudora in a second race to South Polaris.
At first the journey goes smoothly but on the third leg of the trip their ship is sabotaged, and they crash in a wasteland.
The crew continues the race through bitter cold.
Brightstorm has incredible characters: Maudie is clever and mechanically minded, Arthur is sensitive and intuitive, Harriet Culpepper is an unflappable explorer.
The female characters are strong and very intelligent.
Arthur is physically challenged but having only one arm does not prevent him from pursuing the quest.
The characters along with the machines, technology, inventions, magic and thought wolves make this book an incredible read.
The target age is middle school.
The genre of this tale is steam-punk.
(Steam-punk is a retrofuturistic subgenre of science fiction or science fantasy that uses technology and artistic designs motivated by 19th century industrial steam-powered machinery.
) This is a delightful adventure! If you enjoyed “A Series of Unfortunate Events” you will love this tale.
