Yûsuf el-kâtib el-hârezmî (d.

387/997) is one of the prominent scholars in the history of islamic thought, and in his work mefâtihu’l-ulûm, he made scientific evaluations in a wide field ranging from linguistics, to the history of sects and religions, to jurisprudence and vocabulary, and philosophy.

the hârezmi explains the reason for writing the work called mefâtihu’l-ulûm as follows in their own words: the person who needs to know these terms the most is the literate literate who understands that the language science is a tool to achieve the virtue. If this knowledge does not give him a reason to obtain supreme knowledge, he cannot benefit from this knowledge himself. Due to the need to study science and literature, the author cannot be indifferent to knowing these supreme sciences. I have gathered more than what is needed for him, leaning towards the less and more concise, avoiding the long and too much, in this book.

i did not mention the closed and strange ones, which are known and widespread among the public, which, if mentioned, would require lengthy explanation and many comments.

i aimed to find the middle ground between the two parties when it was needed without requiring the other party.

i did not bother with neither excessive detail nor deduction alone, nor did i bother with bringing evidence and witnesses. Because many of these topics are titles and names that i have found, and they are also words that i have arabicized from a foreign/inexperienced language. I named this book mefâtihu’l-ulûm, because it is an introduction to these sciences and a key to many of them.

the person who reads and memorizes and examines the wisdom books exceeds this and surrounds the sciences, even if he does not examine deeply and sits with these owners of knowledge.

i composed the book from two main articles.

the first belongs to the sciences of sharıiat/ religion and arabic language sciences related to it

the second article belongs to the sciences of the greeks and the foreign/naive peoples other than them. Success, help, and strength are only from god.
