In this work, friedrich engels considers the “reasons that made the german revolution of 1848 inevitable and which inevitably led to its suppression in 1848 and 1849”. Why couldn't the working class take the lead of the revolutions in germany? Why couldn't the representatives of the petty bourgeoisie bring these revolutions forward? Why only communists defended the goal of a single and indivisible german republic? Why has this goal not been met? Engels wrote the articles in this book in english for a newspaper published in the usa. Therefore, he had tried to summarize developments in germany in a way that readers who do not have first-hand knowledge of this country could understand.

The first german translation includes an article on the trials in germany in 1852 of the members of the communist league, whose founders, including karl marx and engels, were at the end of the revolution and counterrevolution in germany, which was published after engels' death, and shed light on the league's goals at that time.
