Product description
Benito Cereno
Herman Melville / Dedalus Books
*Benito Cereno* is a work that stands at the crossroads of everything. It is complex. To resolve this dilemma, we can draw on the following insights: Melville’s novel could also be called a novella—while offering the first signs of the modern novel during the pre-modern era, it also approaches a postmodern trajectory—having embraced its contemporary definition long before it was established. It is also one of the finest early examples of psychological characterization. When we say these things, we believe the confusion lessens somewhat.
Let’s simplify things a bit: Two ships loaded with slaves meet at the entrance to a cove. The captain of the ship not named Benito Cereno boards the other one. For a visit. Everyone on the ship is Black. He looks for a few white people. He finds them. He questions the captain. But he just can’t get through to him. Toward the end of the novel, Captain Alaso, who made this visit, begins to think that everything that happened took place only in his own mind. A surprising ending awaits him.
