Pierre Christin, born in 1938, was passionate about detective stories and illustrated covers.
He studied at the Sorbonne and Sciences Po Paris.
In the 1960s, he explored the American West, developing a love for science fiction, crime novels, and black music.
In 1967, he co-created Valérian with Jean-Claude Mézières.
This series, translated into twenty languages, was considered avant-garde and inspired many authors and directors, including George Lucas and Luc Besson, who directed a film adaptation in 2017: 'Valérian and the City of a Thousand Planets.
' Christin also wrote for Jacques Tardi, François Boucq, and Jean Vern, producing around sixty albums across various genres.
He collaborated with Enki Bilal on political comics like 'Les Phalanges de l'ordre Noir' (1979) and 'Partie de chasse' (1983).
With Annie Goetzinger, he created intimate female portraits.
A seasoned traveler, he documented his global journeys.
He also explored other forms of writing, including novels.
He received the Goscinny Prize in 2019 for his autobiographical album 'Est/Ouest.
' Jean-Claude Mézières, born in 1938, befriended Pierre Christin in childhood.
They shared a passion for science fiction and comics.
Mézières was fascinated by 'Spirou' and westerns, drawing his first western comic at 15. He studied at the School of Applied Arts and published his first comic, 'Bill le shériff,' in 1955. After military service, he worked as a layout artist and illustrator.
In 1965, he traveled to the United States, where Christin encouraged him to to comics.
Their collaboration led to the debut of Valérian and Laureline in 'Pilote' in 1967. This series, spanning 25 albums and translated into many languages, significantly influenced science fiction, with George Lucas acknowledging its impact on 'Star Wars.
' Beyond Valérian, Mézières contributed to various specialized magazines and illustrated for the general press.
He also worked in cinema, designing sets and umes for films like 'The Fifth Element,' where he conceived the idea of flying taxis.
He received numerous accolades, including the Grand Prix of Angoulême in 1984 and an Inkpot Award at San Diego Comic-Con in 2006. A documentary, 'L'Histoire de la page 52,' chronicles his creative process.
In 2021, Dargaud published 'L'Art de Mézières,' a retrospective of his career.
