Product description

Michel foucault has become one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century, demonstrating how power relations and techniques permeate even the most unexpected aspects of life. We present the first volume of the six-volume selected writings, which fully frames foucault's anti-dominance world against today's world where power relations are accepted without objection: the political function of the intellectual. From the dreyfus affair during the french revolution to the events of may '68 following the october revolution, the role intellectuals played in pivotal political processes throughout european history has consistently sparked vigorous debate. The answer to the question of what is the political function of the intellectual inevitably requires a detailed analysis of the intellectual's relationship with power, the masses, and social reality. According to foucault, since the eighteenth century, the western intellectual has always seen himself as a spokesperson for a universal truth and has claimed to be the rider, the conscience, and the pioneer of the masses who do not know this truth in political struggles against power. However, it is time for the intellectual to abandon this task he imposed on himself: the intellectual has no right to tell others what they should do, because the masses are aware of what is good for them. Moreover, the social, political, and economic predictions often made by traditional intellectuals based on scientific claims have not come to pass, and neither have the promises they made been fulfilled. But this criticism of foucault is not just a disappointment with the historical consequences of intellectual leadership. A complex theoretical critique that radically rethinks concepts like power, truth, and science, and introduces a completely new intellectual understanding in a political sense. The political function of the intellectual brings together the analyses of truth and power behind this new intellectual understanding, which has caused very extensive discussions in the west. For those interested in exploring how to transform power dynamics that permeate society without creating new forms of domination.
