Alfa Yayınları Quran Translations in the Era of Nationalism

Product description

For two last centuries, the basic text of islam has gone through a double revolution.

muslim communities in the world accepted the printing and translation of the quran, effectively turning the transcribed text into a readable version in every language.

Process that began with the publication of the sharh and translations in the local languages of the ottoman empire and south asia, with controversial editions, evolved into widespread efforts to translate and print the koran in every region of the islamic world, including arab-speaking countries such as egypt and saudi arabia.

these efforts are remarkable considering that at the dawn of the twentieth century, most muslims considered their translation of the koran impossible, even impermissible or even kafir.

eventually the printed and translated versions of the quran were widely accepted by muslim communities.

Focusing on the ottoman empire and turkey and following the discussions in russia, egypt, indonesia and india, this book examines the question of how this revolution happened.
