summary:The 20th century is a time of accelerating social, political and cultural transformations for women.

This fifth volume of the women's history series, which focuses on the experiences of women in the west and offers a multidimensional history, examines the fundamental changes experienced by women during this period shaped by wars, revolutions, regime changes, and economic transformations.

Although traditional gender roles have been reproduced during this period and used as a tool of oppression on women, their pursuit of economic independence, increasing political visibility, the rise of feminist waves, and the expansion of women's right to speak on their own bodies have strengthened their demands for equality.

“everyone who has contributed to the book demonstrates a common commitment to addressing it from a social gender perspective that highlights history, relations between genders and the evolution of social gender systems.

”–susan ware, journal of american history"this work, which is a comprehensive anthropological study of the lives of women in the west over 20 centuries, offers rich content about the state, working life, philosophy, war, art, demographics, family, and feminist struggle topics that have shaped the women's movement from 1900 to the present."
